Fascination is the key to quality

Organ concerts by Rens Swart English text Nederlandse tekst

November 2016

Although I am fascinated by the organ and I have played thousands of hours, with thousand in church, as an amateur it is not straightforward to give organ concerts. For that you have to master the music into the tiniest details and that is not what I am aiming at. I guess this holds for most amateurs. Maybe that is the reason for the disdain for amateurs, as I described earlier at the bottom of the page on my education as an organist.

Nevertheless, I gave a few organ concerts, including the aiming at perfection. In 1984 when the organ of the church of Saint-Boniface in Alphen aan den Rijn was inaugurated after the restoration, and in 1985 when the 300th birthday of the greatest composer of all times, Johann Sebastian Bach, was celebrated. Then it was silent for 30 years, at least concerning concerts, but on the 30th July 2016 I gave a concert again, this time in the Basilica of Saint John in Oosterhout. I choose the theme to be 'Lyrics in organ music' and couldn't resist writing an extensive and personal explanation for the audience.
