Fascination is the key to quality

Tenth Jaguar Nordlichter Treffen in Jork (near Hamburg, April 2017) English text

4 May 2017
A sorry for my Dutch readers: het spijt me, deze pagina heb ik niet in het Nederlands vertaald.

On this page you will find a short report on the Treffen, illustrated with a selection of a selection of my photos. I oldfashionedly coded the html to scale the photos to the full width of the window/column. But they are only 1024 pixels to limit download time and memory requirements, so if you drag the window very large, they will become pixelated.

UK and NL in convoy to Jork

In the end, only two UK members of XJ40.com were able to attend the meeting in Jork. Luke (with father Les) drove directly from the ferry in Duinkerken (Dunkirk) to Jork. Carl and Florence arrived Friday early in the morning at Hoek van Holland (Hook of Holland). Carl and Florence and Sabine and me drove to Pim and Cassandra's home near Haarlem and Hillegom for a coffee. Photo: Sabine, Cassandra and Florence with my Daimler Double Six.

Before heading to Germany, we stopped for fuel in Hillegom. After we left, the petrol station was closed for the rest of the day, as they had earned enough and the tanks were almost empty lachebekje (photo Cassandra).

Fuel stop near Hillegom

Heading to Jork, Sabine and me from home (Thuis) to Pim and Cassandra near Haarlem and then via Amsterdam, Amersfoort, Hengelo (NL), Osnabrück and Bremen to Hamburg, or in fact Jork. 605 km for us.

Route from Hillegom to Jork

We managed to keep driving in convoy for all 500 kilometer. Nice!!

Cars drove flawlessly, although … my Double Six was loosing steering oil at the filter and Pim's Insignia had a oil pressure sensor on its way out (it would make me nervous).

The cars and people

Florian and Nicole welcomed us Friday evening with bread, sausages, cheese and draught beer. We met Simon, who came from Switzerland by plane. He is the designer of the book Thirty years of Jaguar XJ40 and it was the first time Pim, the author, met him. As Simon was amazed that I recognized the typefaces he used in the book, we had interesting talks on typography of books and also on websites and design software. It was a good decision of me to take the XJ40 book with me. The man who represented Jaguar for more than thirty years in Jaguar (sorry, I forgot his name) had a detailed look in the book. Pity it is sold out.

For us, our guesthouse 'Obsthof Ueck' was only 200 meter from Florian and Nicole. An old house, typical for das altes Land.

Next morning, we gathered at 'Obstparadies Schuback' at the western street in Jork. Florian's Chasseur Stealth indicated where we should be.

Nicole got everyone a surviving bag, when we entered the fruit farm for coffee and apple cookies and endless talks.

A few of the XJ40s together: Pim's peppermint Sovereign Insignia, Carl's Daimler 4.0, my Double Six, and Luke's 3.2S.

A few photos of individual cars.

Luke's 3.2S. You wouldn't say so, but he got the award for the car with the highest 'Laufleistung' (odometer reading, kilometerstand): 250,000 km.

Pim's Sovereign Insignia.

Florian's Chasseur Stealth.

Leo's XJ-S V12.

Daimler V8 X308 with crown wheels.

Elected one of the best cars, this XJ-S V12.

Günter converted his XJ-S to the XJ81 six litre V12. With Arden wheels.

Remarkable bright blue XKR with 20" rims.

Leo lost one of the wiper blades of his XJ-S. Carl had a solution: a kitchen sponge …

Carl, Florence, Anne-Marie, Pim, Cassandra, Leo and photographer Sabine went for a walk in the orchards.

The boat trip in Hamburg harbour

We got a private cruise via the river Elbe in the harbour of Hamburg.

The women had a nice time together: Anne-Marie (partner Leo), Sabine (Rens), Cassandra (Pim) and Florence (Carl).

That's me! taking zillions of photos. Mind the temporary (?) beard.

Wealthy villas along the river Elbe. And the weird shaped Airbus Beluga that flies large sections of the fuselage of Airbus airplanes from the one production facility to the other, e.g. from Toulouse to Hamburg … that's the price for a pan-European airliner manufacturer.

All details of the primarily large container vessels were mentioned.

Wide …

The new Elbphilharmonie concert hall building, built on top of older warehouses. It is 110 meter high and features a very irregularly shaped spectacular concert hall. With a large brand new Klais pipe organ!

Russian U-boot submarine.

Two incredibly ridiculously large cruise ships, the Aida Prima and the Aida Sol.

Anyway, the ladies were

The marriage

Sabine has several jobs at the same time at the moment, so she had to work when I drove back to The Netherlands. That's what a Daimler is made for. What a silence!

What's next?

On the next page is a report consisting of a small selection of Sabine's and my photographs with short texts. The last page contains an album of the full selection of 184 photos.
